About

The Royal Borough has two foot tunnels at Greenwich and Woolwich which are used by 1.5 million people a year to cross underneath the river Thames.

The Greenwich Foot Tunnel crosses beneath the River Thames in East London, linking Greenwich on the south bank with Millwall on the north. Approximately 4,000 people use the tunnel each day. It opened in 1902.

You can use the foot tunnel to walk to Island Gardens on the north of the river for the famous "Canaletto view" of Greenwich. You can see the sensational Old Royal Naval College on the river front, framing the iconic Queen's House and the Royal Observatory behind them on top of the hill in Greenwich. A sight not to be missed!

There are stairs and lifts at each entrance. Cyclists must dismount, without exception, when using the tunnels.

Greenwich Foot Tunnel is open 24 hours a day.

Please note that in the event of either of the tunnels being closed users may use the DLR at cost.
